Connecticut Harbor HOUSE
Guilford, Connecticut
3,000 sqft
Completed 2019 with Jacob Sandmann
This substantial renovation for a pair of scientists nearing retirement enhances the house's connection to the harbor and the sky. The 1960s New England Cape was deemed a tear down due to general neglect and water damage, but the structure was viable and the layout was adaptable, so we chose to rehabilitate what we could as to not be wasteful.
We took advantage of the solar orientation of the home to bring light and warmth into the kitchen, living room, and bedrooms via new glazing on the southern face. The window and door openings are also strategic to maximize enjoyment of the offshore breeze and expansive harbor views, and to provide many ways to easily step out of and enter the house.
Wall-to-wall carpets were removed and white oak floors sanded. New materials were inspired by the colors and every-changing textures of water, sand, and stone—elements of the surrounding environment.
The kitchen's custom millwork and well-placed work-zones were designed to support the couple's desire to prepare meals while also conversing with extended family and guests. The furniture was thoughtfully selected to make the home feel uncluttered while meeting the needs of the space. Each piece has precise purpose and is loved by the owners.
