Connecticut Harbor House

Guilford, Connecticut

This substantial renovation enhances the house's connection to the harbor and the sky. The 1960s New England Cape was deemed a teardown due to general neglect and water damage, but the structure was viable, and the layout was adaptable, so we chose to rehabilitate what we could so as not to be wasteful.

We leveraged the home's solar orientation to bring light and warmth into the kitchen, living room, and bedrooms through new glazing on the southern face. The window and door openings are strategically placed to maximize enjoyment of the offshore breeze and expansive harbor views.

Wall-to-wall carpets were removed, and white oak floors were sanded. New materials were inspired by the colors and ever-changing textures of water, sand, and stone—elements of the surrounding environment.

The kitchen's custom millwork and well-placed work zones were designed to support the couple's desire to prepare meals while also conversing with extended family and guests. The furniture was thoughtfully selected to keep the home uncluttered while meeting the space's needs.
